I believe that craft is a set of skills really about making and experiencing the process, seeing the results and how you can influence and change them. I am interested in sculpted organic shapes, how they can be extended, altered, overlapped and patterned. In beginning a piece, I think first about the shape and then how basketry techniques can be used to build that shape. Then I think about the pattern of the weaving. When people look at my work, I want them to be surprised that a basket can look like that. I like the idea that baskets are three dimensional functional containers or vessels and used to hold, preserve, store, display and hide. Found objects - especially wood that has been altered by wind, water or time - appeal to me and appear as edges, bases, ends and handles.
Judy Goodman has been making baskets since 1997. She has been a member of the Salt Spring Island Basketry Guild and has participated in many of the workshops organized by the guild. She participates in juried shows, exhibits regularly on Salt Spring Island, and is represented in a number of private collections in Canada and the United States.
